Richards War in the Pacific Page
Overall War in the Pacific game is good, if not a great game. A lot of work must have gone into its development, and the level of detail that can be seen in most of it is truly daunting. As a combat simulation it excels, as a historical study it lacks some important aspect, and these aspects detract from and otherwise solid product. This page will explore some of these aspects from a players perspective. Although I freely admit that I am not a programmer, I do have enough experience in both programming and game design and modification to make informed comments on what is and is not possible.
First, the logistics model sadly fails to properly simulate the logistical aspect of the war, especially from the Allied perspective. This failure can be discerned on several levels. At the most base level was the decision to have only two major forms of logistical support, those being supplies and fuel. Basic assumption are understood to have been made that there will always be correct supplies ordered/available, regardless of the nature of the need. This flies into the face of historical reality, where the logistical world is simply more than fuel for ships and ambiguous supplies. A multitude of examples can be found in the where limitations on certain items place a limit on possible operations. As an example, the Japanese land based naval squadrons based in Saigon had only one issue of torpedoes available. It is impossible to simulate this in the game as it is now.
Ship reinforcement or the Pacific, both with and without Panama Canal here v04. It is not complete but I am working on it a bit at a time.. Lot of ships to take care of still...
